Where are the woman in type design?

Here is a link to an article written by Verena Gerlach. She raises some interesting points, the one that is really close to my heart regards the female conundrum
of profession vs family, I’m still not sure what the answer is, is it possible to have a family and a successful career or do you need to take a sabbatical to raise children? Does the Graphic Design industry make this harder to achieve than other industries?

Slanted No.12 Women in Graphic Design

Just discovered this AMAZING issue of Slanted Mag (which I am in the process of trying to purchase but the website is in German so not having much luck) It is dedicated to woman in Graphic Design, a subject very close to my heart and that of my 10collective ladies.

They say… Beat That If You Can! – “Slanted #12 – Women, Typography, Graphic Design is a stage for extraordinary and intelligent projects by women. This is not a very special thing. For our focus on visual culture it’s all the same whether a (typo-)graphic work has been realized by a female or a male being. But it’s undeniable and strange that still only very few women are visible in graphic design (more) and typography (less). We want to contribute to more visibility for at least some female type and graphic designers – design by women is at least just as well. Beat That If You Can!

Exclamation marks used to be frowned upon. Now look what’s happened! We use them all the time! Hurrah!!!

In the ninth book of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, Eric, one of the characters insists that “Multiple exclamation marks are a sure sign of a diseased mind.” In Maskerade, the 18th in the series, another character remarks: “And all those exclamation marks, you notice? Five? A sure sign of someone who wears his underpants on his head.”And other interesting insights into the use of the exclamation mark.

I found this link via the blog of Paul McNeil, who chastised me last year for my over use of the mark in question. His explanation was that the exclamation mark was like a cheery wave and therefore unsuitable in academic text!

CCTV in the studio

I have just spotted the new revised website for Sagmeister. The home page is a big brother style webcam, in real time, filming the (very compact) studio.

I love this and what I love even more is that this was a concept we at 10 Collective discussed doing for our web on the lead up to our MA hand-in and then preparing for our exhibition. I so wish we had the technical expertise to have done this and pipped Mr Sagmeister to the post!

I think we should put bets on now to see how long it takes Stefan to strip off and begin walking around naked!

Quite literally one week after I hand in my project for assessment an exhibition related to it opens in London. Bloomin typical eh!
